One of Us is Lying

04 maart 2022
★★★★☆

One of Us is Lying and One of Us is Next by Karen M. McManus were on my TBR for about a year. After Netflix started streaming One of Us is Lying I figured this would be the best time to start reading this series and I’m happy I did. A must read for fans of A Good Girls Guide to Murder, Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl.

“You find out who your real friends are when stuff like this happens. Turns out I didn’t have any”.

Bayview High. Bronwyn, Cooper, Addy, Nate and Simon walk into detention. Only Simon never makes it out of the classroom alive. Turns out that Simon was about to post juicy gossip on his About That app about all four classmates who were in detention with him. When all four had motive to want Simon dead, who do you trust?

One of Us is Lying was such a fun, fast paced and light YA mystery novel to read. Even though I figured out the “whodunnit” aspect pretty soon, the little details about the plot kept me guessing till the end. This however wasn’t what kept me invested in the story, the characters were. I liked how every chapter was told from the perspective of one of the suspects. Bronwyn, Cooper, Addy and Nate start out as your typical high school stereotypes, but the more you read, the more you get to see their flaws, individuality and growth. I thought the way the death of Simon impacted the lives of the four murder suspects was realistic. Most of all, Karen M. McManus did a great job at describing how the death of Simon influenced the different relationships the suspects had with each other and other people involved.
