Life of a prison guard on death row.

FinnleyEU 28 augustus 2021
The book is written as a memoir by Paul Edgecombe, former head prison guard of E-block at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. The story he writes about takes place around 1930, at the time of the great depression. He works at E-block, or The Green Mile as they call it. It is where the prison houses it condemned death row murders. Each of them awaiting their turn to walk The Mile and meet Old Sparky, the electric chair.

Easy to read

The book is easy to read. It has no illustrations on the pages itself, only one in the beginning of a new main chapter. The sub-chapters are short, making it a good book to pick up and read a few pages/sub-chapter here and there. The whole story is well written down, the writer takes the time to explain everything and how Paul feels about other characters like Brutus Howell, Harry Terwilliger, John Coffey or William Wharton. Everything is written in detail, but just in the right way. Not too long, but enough to have you form an image of the place and time.

The book vs The movie (1999)

In 1999 this book was filmed in the movie 'The Green Mile', the book and movie are very similar. The same characters come by, but it differs on some area's. If you liked the movie, then this book is for sure worth reading.
