I was hooked from the very first chapter
“I am going to be your undoing, Prince.”
In this first book of the Powerless trilogy, you follow the stories of Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary girl living in the slums who is trying to hide her “curse,” and Kai Azer, the prince and future Enforcer. Only the Extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya also known as the Elites. They were gifted powers decades ago by the Plague, though not everyone was fortunate enough to survive the sickness and gain abilities.
Some people are born Ordinary, without powers. In order to create a powerful kingdom, the king declares that Ordinary people are a disease to the country and banishes them from the land. Those who refuse to leave are hunted down and executed. If anyone discovers Paedyn’s secret, she will be hunted by none other than Kai Azer himself. When they meet by accident one day, Paedyn’s life takes a dangerous turn.
I loved this book! From the very first chapter, I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. Paedyn is such a strong character with her attitude, fighting skills, and ability to deceive. She has a talent for escaping dangerous situations with nothing more than a bruise. And Kai stole my heart from the very first moment he appeared. Okay, yes, he has done bad things, but who doesn’t love a cheeky bad boy, right?!
The story feels a bit like a combination of The Hunger Games and Divergent, but set in a completely different world. The writing is engaging and filled with sassy banter between Kai and Paedyn, which I absolutely loved. I enjoyed every second of it.
So, if you’re looking for a fantasy book that combines The Hunger Games and Divergent, with sassy characters who are constantly literally at each other’s throats, this is your book. I’m off to read the second one!
