Heb ik gekopieerd van mijn recensie van Goodreads:
Well, this felt like a chore. 1200 pages. I had to take a break several times because I just wasn't pulled into the different story's. The last 200 pages were interesting, though. Although I know my opinion is not popular amongst fantasy lovers, I just have to write something about my reading experience. Frankly, I just cannot understand why a majority of the reviewers gave this book 5 stars. It made me doubt if fantasy is something for me, but then I rememembered I had a wonderful time reading books by Robin Hobb. Her books have everything. She just knows how to captivate a reader and takes you on this emotional journey along with the main character. Perhaps the comparison isn't fair. But I just want to be pulled into this magical story. It has to be well written. The characters need to have some depth.
I will be switching to Dutch (native language) shortly but first my thoughts in English:
Although the magic system was very original and well thought through, I had some issues with:
- the writer's way with words. I found the writing style rather simplistic. The dialogues were rather bland. Most of the characters I just didn't care about..
- the concept of magical armour. I thought it was rather juvenile. This armour in combination with the bridge runs reminded me of computer games.
- The characters. Kaladin's story was interesting. I wanted him to succeed in his efforts. Dalinar also. The rest, Shallan, Jasnah and Sezth I just didn't care what happend to them.
- The writer made some attempts to put some humour in the dialogues, but it just didn't work at all.
- Too much references to historical events. Therefore the pacing was off. Sure, there is a lot of world-building in this book, but it needn't interfere with the pacing.
Overall I give this book 3 stars

Ik ben echt diep teleurgesteld: als dit het beste is wat het fantasy-genre te bieden heeft. Ik bedoel, kom op.. .4.65 op Goodreads. Dat heb ik nog nooit gezien!! Mocht je deze review lezen en het boek ook gelezen hebben, Ik zou graag jouw mening willen weten. Heeft het überhaupt zin om door te gaan met het tweede deel? Of komt dat op hetzelfde neer? Als je ook suggesties hebt voor andere schrijvers, laat het me weten. (less)
