The war is going badly.

A new alien commander, Syriani, is uniting all the clans under one banner, and using the superior force to carve up the outer edges of the empire. The emperor sends Hadrian, his favorite knight, to the neighboring Lothrian Commonwealth to beg them for assistance. The commonwealth refuses to help and stalls, and while negotiating, Hadrian learns their sparse population is facing starvation.

As he prepares to leave to find allies elsewhere, Hadrian is captured by the secret police and is sold-to Syriani. Captured, Hadrian learns more about his greatest enemy as Syriani travels with its hostage to the alien holy planet, impossibly deep behind enemy lines.
