Lezersrecensie
A classic work and fun to read
I read the Dutch translation, but I must write my short review in English. I've not read this book before. I found it a fairly easy, but entertaining read. Others on Hebban (and in many places elsewhere) have written much more eloquently and with deeper knowledge on the parallels of the narrative with the Russian Revolution and its aftermath, and topics such as the seizure and subsequent abuse of power, so I won't write much here. The way in which the pigs gradually increase their grip over the farm and the other animals is quite disturbing and intelligently portrayed. Also the way in which Napoleon builds up his hold on the farm while at the same time becoming an increasingly shadowy figure, who is seen in person less and less by the other animals. I really enjoyed this novella, and it's also a good choice for building up your confidence in reading serious fiction in a foreign language. Next on my agenda is to read a work by an actual Dutch author.
