A Court of Thorns and Roses is all about the imagination of the reader. Author Sarah J. Maas delivers what might be the most popular faerie-inspired book in decades. It's enchanting, spellbinding, creative and just completely beautiful. It has everything to make a book more than just a book. The background of the book is not only outstanding, but also so vivid and true to life. The writing is rich and flourishing and so authentic. The characters are interesting and miscellaneous. They are described in a way such anyone will love the story. Don't get me even started on Feyre.
For those of you who are convinced ACOTAR is a retelling of the classic story Beauty and the Beast ; I don't entirely agree with you. I admit there are some similarities to the story, but far too little to be completely compared to it. It takes all the important themes of the classic out so you're left with only a few elements and the plot line. The only resemblance between Tamlin and a beast is the way his mask covers a part of his being. He can't get rid of it unless true love finds him. For the plot line, we aren't aware of the reason behind his motives to keep Feyre alive and well cared for until the end of the book.
For the first half of the story, I was really questioning if I should continue as the pace of the story was very slow. But I continued and I'm so glad I did, because the book only got better from there on. As the pace moderately increased, Maas created a tempting story with great delight and passionate scenes. Although I was skeptical in the beginning of the book, I couldn't put the book down. Words danced across pages and hours flew by. The book left me hooked to the world of the faerie and I was hungering for more of it. The setting, the story, the writing style; everything fell into place. The world she created is a one of darkness and gloominess but at the same time one of hope and happy moments. These two wonderful worlds collide and I truly enjoyed that.
Now, for the characters. I loved the fact that they're not many characters that were exclusively described as my attention would otherwise be more divided and all over the place. We have her family, which I honestly didn't like that much. They treated Feyre very poorly for the effort she put daily into her family. Although been mistreated in some ways, she still continues to care for them and tries to keep them alive. Then we have Lucien, whom I so much love for his sarcasm. He is sassy and does it with great delight. I love how his bond with Feyre grows throughout the story. And of course we have our dear Feyre. She is strong and independent and doesn't back off when things get rough. She has her mind set on something and nothing will come in her way. Least but not last, we have Tamlin. The love interest of this novel. Tamlin is an enigma Feyre can't get to figure out. He's powerful and mysterious, but also kind and caring. Affected by a curse she doesn't know much about, she is determined to help find a cure.
Although Feyre and Tamlin get off to a rough start, they grow very fond of each other as the pages continue to flip. In the beginning, Feyre is very hostile, but as the days fly by and Tamlins kindness doesn't waver off, she grows to like him. The more time spend in each others presence, the more a connection is formed between these two souls. Desire begins to burn within their hearts and the room temperature gets hotter with the minute. But a threat is around the corner and will their fondness of each other be enough to save themselves from dark and unfortunate times?
The time of sweetness and wonder is over as darkness creeps over the faerie lands. A threat older than faerie itself threatens to be stolen and manipulated by the hand of a powerful faerie. With this evil, more lies, abuse, manipulation and deception are coming Feyre's way. Eventually, the story takes some exciting and chilling turns and the fate of all of faerie rests now on her shoulders. The dark magic of faerie is set into pace and shadows are creeping over the corners of every land.
Her one-of-a-kind storytelling and imaginations, makes Sarah J. Maas one of New Yorks all-time favourites and I couldn't see it otherwise. Although her writing pace is slow to start off with, I couldn't keep my eyes off the pages. She writes in such a delicate and fragile way, that I can't wait to read more of her work. A Court of Mist and Fury is a book that should be in everyone's TBR and can't be missed. It's truly a piece of art.
