As you may know by now, I have been a bit offline lately. But I've been wanting to change that for a while. So the next few weeks there will be plenty more book reviews and recommendations on my page.
After seeing the whole 'Pirates of The Caribbean' -series, I was ready to face a pirate-inspired story with yet another rum soaked and thrillingly amazing adventure. And I must say that Daughter of the Pirate King has all the ingredients I was looking for. With a little bit romance woven into the story, the adventure of the brave young captain and her crew totally lived up to its hype. I wasn't expecting to love this book as much as I did, and while the story took a whole other turn as I expected, it was an amazingly interesting read.
Like most of us, Alosa gave me a strongly 'female Jack Sparrow' vibe twisted with her own unique character traits. Like Jack Sparrow, she is fearless and determined in her mission, ready to devour everything on her path. Except for one nerving flirty first mate of one of her biggest rivals. Most of the Young Adult books out there focus a lot less on the romantic side of the story, but although Daughter of the Pirate King does tilt more to the romantic side, it's still a beautiful slow burn; one of my favourites so far as I mostly don't like slow-burns. Of course, there weren't as many steamy scenes as in New Adult books, though there were some serious sexual tensions and flirty behaviour.
The style of the novel was also a lot less violent as I ought it to be. By no means, Daughter of the Pirate King isn't a dark or vicious pirate story with lots of brutality and gruesome scenes. Anything but that. Of course, some scenes were left to the imagine of the reader, but that makes it also a fun read as the scene is left to your imagination. Another aspect I really liked about this book, is its humor and sarcasm. There are so many witty and hilarious comments, that it's a super entertaining read for everyone who likes a little bit of sarcasm once in a while. Levensellers writing style is unique and her books can easily be read in one whole reading session. I remember not being able to put the book down as it was such an interesting read through the whole the book.
Apart from the storyline, I was absolutely in love with the characters. From Alosa, to Riden, to her crew; every single was was so eccentric and well written. The thing I loved most about Alosa is that she was daring and feisty, and didn't stop being a complete badass woman. Trained by her father, the Pirate King himself, Alosa endured a lot of pain. Nothing can break that down, what makes her the perfect person for the job her father has in mind. There are some beautiful schemes with lots of tension and brilliant plans that are lurking in the dark. It's a fast-paced books what makes it even better in my opinion as it's difficult to keep your readers interested at all times through the book. And she did just that; maybe even more.
Besides pirates, we also get to know a little bit more about Alosa's special gift. However, we get a bit information about her Siren part, there is a lot left to be discovered about it that will probably be the theme for book 2 as I can guess out of the title: Daughter of the Siren Queen. In contrast to her father, Alosa is scared of her powers and doesn't like to use them at all. When she's faced with a situation she cannot escape, fear has no place. Will she subdue her fear, or will the challenge only makes her stronger?
I cannot wait to read the sequel of this action-packed adventurous tale. I'm hoping there will be plenty more of Alosa and Riden, the hilarious comments of her crew, adventure, Siren stuff and most importantly a lot of pirates. I didn't really know Levenseller before I read this book, but I'm so glad I do know, because her books are stunning and so easy to read. Hopefully book two picks up right were book one ended; and if not, I'm sure it will be just as good as this one!
