Normal People

Van Sally Rooney

Een tweede roman van Sally Rooney na Conversations with Friends van vorig jaar. The Guardian is te spreken over Normal People en denkt dat het een toekomstige klassieker zal worden: 'Rooney is such a gifted, brave, adventurous writer, so exceptionally good at observing the lies people tell themselves on the deepest level, in noting how much we forgive, and above all in portraying love.'

Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in rural Ireland. The similarities end there as they are from very different worlds. When they both earn places at a prestigious college, a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years. Sally Rooney’s second novel is an exquisite love story, wry and seductive, perceptive and bold.

Normal People is beschikbaar vanaf 6 september.

Jesus' Son meets Reservoir Dogs in a breakneck-paced debut novel about love, war, bank robberies, and heroin. Cleveland, 2003. A young man is just a college freshman when he meets Emily. They share a passion for Edward Albee and Ecstasy and fall hard and fast in love. But soon Emily has to move home to Elba, New York and he flunks out of school and joins the Army. Desperate to keep their relationship alive, they marry before he ships out to Iraq. But as an Army medic, he is unprepared for the grisly reality that awaits him. His fellow soldiers smoke; they huff computer duster; they take painkillers; they watch porn. And many of them die. He and Emily try to make their long-distance marriage work, but when he returns from Iraq, his PTSD is profound, and the drugs on the street have changed. The opioid crisis is beginning to swallow up the Midwest. Soon he is hooked on heroin, and so is Emily. They attempt a normal life, but with their money drying up, he turns to the one thing he thinks he could be really good at--robbing banks. Cherry marks the arrival of a raw, bleakly hilarious, and surprisingly poignant voice straight from the dark heart of America.

Cherry is beschikbaar vanaf 1 september.

Future Popes of Ireland

A sharp chronicler, you can practically smell the past as it wafts up at you from his pages. And while there's tragedy, and outrage, too, there's whipsmart satire and riotous comedy alongside a type of scholarliness that provides this novel with its zest and ingenuity. Think Zadie Smith. But much funnier.' Auteur John Boyne noemt het 'hilarious and timely, a dazzling debut’.

Bridget Doyle has one goal: for her family to produce the very first Irish pope. Thirty years later, it seems unlikely any of Granny Doyle’s grandchildren are going to fulfil her hopes. Damien is trying to find the courage to tell her he’s gay. Rosie is a dreamy blue-haired rebel. And John Paul is a chancer and a charmer - but he’s not exactly Pontiff material. None of them have contact with their sister Peg, ever since she ran away from home as a teenager. But that’s about to change…

Future Popes of Ireland is beschikbaar vanaf 1 september. We geven vijf 'limited edition proof copies' weg in ruil voor een recensie mét redactiefeedback. Kijk snel bij de winactie!

Van Peter F. Hamilton

Humanity's complex relationship with technology spirals out of control in this first book of an all-new trilogy from "the owner of the most powerful imagination in science fiction" (Ken Follett).

In 2204, humanity is expanding into the wider galaxy in leaps and bounds. A new technology of linked jump gates has rendered most forms of transporation--including starships--virtually obsolete. Every place on earth, every distant planet mankind has settled, is now merely a step away from any other. And all seems wonderful...until a crashed alien spaceship is found on a newly-located world 89 light years from Earth, harboring seventeen human victims. And of the high-powered team dispatched to investigate the mystery, one is an alien spy...

Bursting with tension and big ideas, this standalone series highlights the inventiveness of an author at the top of his game, as the interweaving story lines tell us not only how humanity arrived at this moment, but also the far-future consequences that spin off from it.
