Lucy’s life is turned upside down when she becomes the sudden owner of a life-like mechanical doll as part of a beta-testing program. The prospect of robots that are indistinguishable from humans triggers a variety of ethical questions and makes many people nervous, including Lucy initially. As she tries to find a place for the android Sandis in her life they together discover what true humanity and friendship means, but not without making some enemies along the way.
