A Starting Fire

EricWijnen 07 mei 2024
Nobody needs to be told who Stephen King is. Most people have either read one or more of his stories, or have seen movies or TV-series based on his stories. The same goes for Firestarter, his eight published novel, that has already been brought to the silver screen twice. I haven't seen both of those movies.

The story is about Charlie McGee who can start fires using pyrokinesis. Her father also has a smal bit of her power, where he can suggest things to people by 'pushing' them as he calls it. In the beginning of the book they are, already quite some time, on the run for The Shop, who are very interested in Charlie's ability. Charlie however has sworn to herself not ever using her power anymore, because there have been accidents when she did. Bad accidents.

Although I liked the sory (and probably will try to watch the movies about this story) sometimes the timelines don't add up, and that kicked me - albeit shortly - out of the story. The story could have been shorter, because a lot of it is about the background of the characters and nothing much seems to happen, only further establish the relation between these characters. Eventhough that is the case, the read is very easy.

The chapters in the book are of varying length. Some as short as less than a page, some as long as ten to fifteen pages.
