Epic Roman Dystopian Fantasy
Not even trying to give you outlines. I taught Roman history for a decade and how James Islington weaves the historical elements of the late Roman empire into this dystopian fantasy, is just an utter treat. I thouroughly enjoyed the linguistic elements as well. Language that evoques and challenges and sets my brain on fire.
worldbuilding: 10/10
characters: 9/10
plot: 9/10 (the twists, tension, slowburn romance,... he does them all very well!)
language: 10/10
Yes, this book is worth the hype. Don't be intimidated by the 600+ pages. I promise you, you will want more pages when you get to the end. Luckily it's on the horizon: in November part II is coming out.
Although I have stacks of books still to read, I am willing time to go faster (pun intended) so I can get back to Vis and his found family, especially Eidhin .
5 star read. Definitely!
