A bit of light reading

Synopsis:
Kiva survived 10 years of the harshest prison environment as a healer. Hated by many, she is determined to survive. But then they bring in the Rebel Queen, who has to survive the trials by ordeal (wind, fire, water and earth) although she is bedridden by illness...

My reading experience:
I had a great time with this book though it is not great literature. Kiva has just enough depth as a character to come across as believable. The slowburn romance was very young and cute, matching the ages of the fmc & mmc. The worldbuilding of the prison is nice, but beyond Zalindov, the world is still vastly unknown to the reader. The politics I found lacking (can't say much as I don't want to spoil it for you) and I saw a few alternative ways to solve a problem or where the motives of princes and princesses were dubious.
If you don't like a narrator in first person you can't rely on, this one is not for you. The end didn't deliver as the set up of this book: the plot twists were delivered late in the story (and too early to be a cliffhanger) and they were plenty. Which took me out of the vibe of the story. I think one of them could have been an awesome kickstart of the 2nd book in this trilogy.

,5/5
All in all I think it was enjoyable, light and fun without me having to be too critical. Great read for young readers who like dystopian novels and trials.
