Good vibes ghost story
Sweet story.
I can't really say it's scary, probably because the protagonist's curiosity si so damn strong that it wins the fear most of the time and makes her brave. One could even say too curious and fearless for her own good. The notes of fear in her are just small moments and not extensively described, so it really goes in the background. Probably by design.
It is one of those ghost stories a bit Ghost Whisperer's style, where the protagonist goes all out to save the situation, though I'd say more often than not because of her curiosity and the ghost/s putting her in situations where she has no other choice, but the good intentions are still there.
This is my first book from this author so I have no clue if this is her generic story staple. Anyway really smooth read that keeps you wanting to know more as you go, will certainly read more from her in the future.
Is Ellie a recall to Hill House's Eleanor or just a coincidence? Who knows.
Addendum:
The novel is followed by a short story, Crawlspace, which is what gave birth to the novel.
But oh my!! Dare I say, it's so much better!! It was really terrifying, it gave me chills and I'm so glad I read it in the safety of my bed, under the blankets, although in the dark. Superb!!
Now I'm curious what of her work is more similar to this story. Because while I can clearly see the similarities with Gillespie House and how it gave birth to it, the vibe is so drastically different! Absolutely loved it, Crawlspace gets an easy 5 stars.
