Based on history and legend

Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) was an American writer, publisher, artist and philosopher.
He's also the author of one of my favourite quotes: "Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive."
That made me curious to discover his works and I decided to start with the short story The Silver Arrow.

What immediately struck me was the writing style without frills. As if this was just a blueprint for a story that needed to be fleshed out afterwards.
Furthermore the wole is not in balance. Some important parts are described summarily in just a few sentences which leaves a very rushed impression, while others take pages.

As some of the names did ring a bell (Sir Walter Raleigh for example), I wondered if it was based on a true story. A search on the internet learned me that Virginia Dare did indeed exist and that part of the story is thus based on facts. And also on the legend of the White Doe.

The story in itself isn't worth more stars.
But as it was an interesting introduction to a part of English and American history that was unknown to me, I'm glad I've read it.
