Columbus Day: An Absolutely Explosive Start!

ThaFreeze 25 juni 2025
Wow! I just devoured Columbus Day, the first book in the Expeditionary Force series, and I absolutely loved it! This one easily gets a full 5 out of 5 stars from me. From the very beginning, I was hooked.

The universe Craig Alanson creates is expansive and intriguing, filled with layers of different alien races and even ancient races before them. The initial attack and introduction to the human crew immediately pulled me in. There was a great build-up, that feeling of waiting for a major twist, and when the action truly kicked off, it just didn't stop. It was so much fun and packed with thrilling moments!

As always, I listened to the audiobook, and it made the whole experience even better. The narration really brings the characters to life, especially the incredibly funny dynamic between them.

Spoiler alert: Specific plot details ahead!

The real highlight for me was the instant, hilarious banter between Skippy and Bishop. Honestly, their back-and-forth had me crying with laughter! It's pure gold and a massive reason why this book is so entertaining.

Beyond the humor, the story also has some genuinely serious and impactful parts. The depiction of the Krustang's society, particularly their hate for females and their willingness to imprison our heroes just because they refused to kill civilians, was genuinely disturbing. You really see how bad they are, and I immediately started to despise them. It was also interesting to see the Ruhar trying to explain the real situation, adding layers to the alien conflicts. And those mysterious Sentinels? They definitely gave me some Mass Effect Reapers flashbacks, adding another layer of vast, ancient threat to the universe. The tension and the action were non-stop, but always balanced with that fantastic humor.

If you're looking for a brilliant military sci-fi series with incredible humor, non-stop action, and a truly unique alien AI, you absolutely need to pick up Columbus Day. This book is an absolute blast from start to finish, and I can't wait to dive into the rest of the series!
