Network Effect: Murderbot Takes On More Than Expected
I just finished Network Effect, the fifth full-length installment in the Murderbot Diaries, and I really enjoyed it. It definitely earns a solid 4 out of 5 stars from me.
Listening to the audiobook was, as usual, a fantastic experience. Kevin R. Free's narration was spot on. He absolutely nails Murderbot's sarcastic inner monologue, the jokes, and the distinct interactions between all the characters. His performance makes the whole thing even better.
This book felt like a significant step up in scope for Murderbot. It's a bigger story, expanding the universe in interesting ways, and it kept me hooked right through.
Spoiler alert: Some plot details ahead.
One of the best parts was definitely the return of ART. The dynamic between Murderbot and ART is just so unique and it adds a lot to the story. I also really liked seeing "Murderbot 2.0" as our favorite SecUnit deals with new abilities and challenges. Plus, the introduction of another free SecUnit was a cool development, opening up even more possibilities for future stories. The plot felt much larger, delving into bigger stakes and more complex situations than some of the earlier novellas.
If you've been following the Murderbot Diaries, you absolutely need to read Network Effect. It builds on everything that makes this series great, delivers plenty of action and character moments, and leaves you excited for whatever Murderbot gets into next.
