Easy read, Tik Tok hype

Dutch person review in English:
I read the book "Powerless" in English, and my review will also be in English. This book is a TikTok hit, and it had the potential to be something good. I started this book with an open mind, fearing it would be another semi-erotic novel, as most TikTok recommendations seem to be. I was surprised to find that there is no explicit sex in it, though the characters do hint at wanting more, or at least a kiss.

The story revolves around Paedyn and Kai (Malakai), who have vastly different upbringings. Paedyn lives in an alley, having lost her father to murder, and steals to get by with her best friend. Kai, on the other hand, was raised to become the Enforcer, essentially an executioner. He has suffered much abuse from his father, the King, to make him dangerous and strict. A romance begins to blossom between them, though it never fully materializes. Kai also has a brother, Kitt, who is very different from their father and is set to become the next king. Kitt is kind and the complete opposite of his father.

The story is set in a world where people have different levels of powers, or none at all.

I found myself laughing a few times while reading because it sometimes felt like I was reading a Wattpad story. Kai is often shirtless and sweaty or drenched in other liquids (blood, rain), which creates an interesting image for Paedyn. His dimples are frequently mentioned, and he often runs his hands through his hair. It’s a bit cliché but described in a fun way.

I read it more for the story, though I secretly hoped Paedyn and Kai would end up together. Many plot points were predictable.

Overall, "Powerless" is a very enjoyable book and an easy read. That’s what I can say about it.
