Onlangs publiceerde Novel Suspects een lijstje met de vijf boeken die Michael Connelly als de 'top' beschouwt. Liefhebbers van Michael Connelly kennen hem als de schrijver van de Harry Bosch serie, waarvan wereldwijd meer dan zestig miljoen exemplaren zijn verkocht. Naast het schrijven van boeken is Connelly uitvoerend producent van Bosch, de Amazon Prime Original-serie met in de hoofdrol Titus Welliver. Onlangs is hij gestart met de misdaadpodcast Murder Book.
Aan Novel Suspects vertelde hij welke zijn vijf favoriete mysteries en thrillers aller tijden zijn.

Raymond Chandler: The Little Sister

Mousy Orfamay Quest vraagt privé-detective Philip Marlowe om haar oudere broer Orrin op te sporen. Marlowe begint zijn speurwerk met het laatst bekende adres van Orrin in Bay City. Hij komt bij een gepensioneerde optometrist, stuit op een met eeen ijsprik vermoorde commissaris, gaat naar aanleiding van een anoniem telefoontje naar een kamer in het Van Nuys Hotel, treft er een blondje aan en vindt even later de optometrist die vermoord is. Het blondje blijkt de filmster Mavis Weld te zijn. Deze filmster blijkt iets te doen te hebben met Orrin, de vermiste broer van Orfamay.

“So glad you two got acquainted,” a voice off to one side said coolly. Mavis Weld stood in the archway. Her hair was fluffed out carelessly and she hadn’t bothered with make-up. She wore a hostess gown and very little else. Her legs ended in little green and silver slippers. Her eyes were empty, her lips contemptuous. But she was the same girl all right, dark glasses on or off.

Chandler weet de eenzaamheid, verveling en kwetsbaarheid van zijn hoofdpersoon treffend te schetsen.

I have to go with this as my top choice because this was the book that really inspired me to want to be a writer of crime fiction. It perfectly integrates character and city. Marlowe is Los Angeles and Los Angeles in Marlowe. Chapter 11 is a classic piece of prose in which Chandler uses the crime novel to say what he feels about the city and society. It’s perfect.

Harper Lee: To Kill a Mockingbird

Jean Louise Finch, roepnaam Scout, heeft een vier jaar oudere broer, Jem. Hun vader is de advocaat Atticus Finch. Zijn 15 jaar jongere vrouw is aan een hartaanval gestorven toen Scout twee jaar was. Ze wonen samen met hun zwarte huishoudster Calpurnia in Maycomb. Als Scout zes jaar is, komt Dill in hun buurt bij Dills tante Rachel logeren. Alle buurtbewoners mijden Radley Place, waar de Radleys wonen die als gevaarlijk te boek staan. Jem, Scout en Dill spelen soms dat ze de Radleys zijn: Jem als Mrs. Radley, Dill als Mr. Nathan Radley en Scout als Boo, officieel Arthur Radley, die nooit het huis uit komt. Als het drietal een keer op Radleys terrein is, ziet Nathan Radley hen. Hij schiet met een geweer en het drietal vlucht, waarbij Jem zijn broek verliest.

Atticus said to Jem one day, "I'd rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."

That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it.

"Your father's right," she said. "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."

Wanneer Scout acht jaar is, verdedigt haar vader de zwarte Tom Robinson. De blanke Mayelle Ewell beweert dat zij door Tom is geslagen en verkracht. Mayelle wordt geloofd omdat ze blank is. Atticus Finch doet er alles aan om aan te tonen dat Tom geen blaam treft.

To Kill a Mockingbird is een prachtige, tijdloze klassieker

I know what you’re thinking, that this is on the wrong list. This is the great American novel, not a mystery or a thriller. But I beg to differ. To me it is mystery with a message, perhaps the best legal thriller ever. It, of course, is a study in courage and social reflection on race and justice, but it also pushed me to the edge of my seat when I read it the first time about 50 years ago, and every time since.

Joseph Wambaugh: The Black Marble

Dit verhaal speelt zich af in Los Angeles. Dames van de high society bezoeken countryclubs, modehows en hondenshows, waar de meest excentrieke dames hun zo mogelijk nog extravaganter hondjes tentoonstellen. Totdat kidnapping en chantage een eind dreigen te maken aan deze dure liefhebberij. Vickie, de showhond van Madeline Whitfield dreigt te worden gekidnapt. Zij is een eenzame weduwe die vroeger rijk was, maar nu op zwart zaad zit en die gek is op haar hond. De aan drank verslaafde politieman sergeant Valkinof en zijn teamgenoot Natalie proberen de zaak op te lossen.

To Madeline Whitfield the day was significant only because it was Friday. And that meant it was only two days from Sunday. And Sunday meant the Winter Show of 1977, sponsored by the elite Kennel Club of Beverly Hills, at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.

Het verhaal is meeslepend, soms met humoristisch, soms tragisch. Het geeft een prachtig beeld van het leven in het rijke Zuid-Californië. Wambaugh schetst mooie karakters.

Connelly over dit boek:

This book to me is the classic police novel. It has a through story about a crime and investigation but it is so layered and so full of what it means to take on the job of law enforcement. I think it could only have been written by an author who had spent time on the police beat.

Raymond Chandler: The Long Goodbye

Terry Lennox vraagt Marlowe om hem naar Tijuana te brengen, maar niet om waarom. Later blijkt de vermogende vrouw van Lennox te zijn vermoord. De politie vermoedt dat Marlowe Lennox heeft geholpen haar te vermoorden. Marlowe komt in de gevangenis. Als hij wordt vrijgelaten, blijkt dat Lennox zelfmoord heeft gepleegd en dat hij Marlowe een briefje, een foto en geld heeft nagelaten.

He thanked me and hung up. I wondered who could have given me the plug. I thought it might be Sewell Endicott and called him to find out. But he had been out of town all week, and still was. It didn't matter much. Even in my business you occasionally get a satisfied customer. And I needed a job because I needed the money--or thought I did, until I got home that night and found the letter with a portrait of Madison in it.

Een van de beste Chandlers met een prachtige twist op het eind.

I have to go back to Chandler again because he’s the master. I almost put a Ross Macdonald book here but at the last minute went this Chandler. This is probably his most accomplished novel. I read it after seeing the movie. Loved both and soon I was on the road to writing about L.A.

Thomas Harris: Red Dragon

Red Dragon van Thomas Harris is de voorloper van Silence of the Lambs dat zo succesvol verfilmd werd. In Red Dragon is Will Graham een gepensioneerde FBI-forensisch expert. Graham woont in Florida met zijn vrouw en stiefzoon. Zijn oude collega en vriend, Jack Crawford, komt hem om hulp vragen. Een psychopathische moordenaar is op vrije voeten en Crawford weet dat alleen iemand als Graham kan helpen om hem te pakken te nemen.

“Didn’t Crawford tell you that? He was my supervisor the two times I left the FBI Academy to go back to the field. Those two cases were the only ones like this he ever had, and Jack’s been working a long time. Now he’s got a new one. This kind of psychopath is very rare. He knows I’ve had . . . experience.”

Het is een verhaal vol spanning en forensische technologie die ook nu nog een van de besten in zijn genre is.

I think this is possibly the most influential crime novel in the last 40 years. It is totally absorbing and thrilling and it brought all the advancements of technology, psychology and law enforcement into play in a masterfully constructed story. All of that and throw in one of the greatest literary villains and a damn good hero and you have one of the best books of any kind.
