Six-hundred years ago, God and his angels destroyed most of the human world during the Breaking.In the small piece of land left for humanity to live in, Souri and her family struggle to survive. Again and again, they are forced to flee from people who want to kill them for possessing strange powers. As Souri is kidnapped by a Kàyroïn Priestess, her family fears her to be taken to serve as a human sacrifice. But her captors need her for something entirely different. They know things about her that make her doubt everything she has ever believed in. Who is she, and what does the father she never knew have to do with all this? It gets more and more difficult to distinguish truth from lies.

And in all this misery, there is a Priest who somehow makes Souri's feelings gets all tangled up. Is he using black magic on her, or is her hidden, dark side attracted to him?

While Souri faces the unprecedented brutality of her captors, her twin brother Khrian sets off in pursuit, determined to free her. But not all of his traveling companions have Souri's best interests at heart …
