Nothing but praise for this book. Strange as it may sound, this is a Roald Dahl book that I only now read for the first time. Of course, I've seen the hilarious movie (with Rowan Atkinson as hotel director), but unfortunately, as a kid, I never came across this book. And yes, the book is even better. There's no romantic image of witches in this story, they're purely loathable evil creatures with an intense dislike and hatred for children (apart for 1 that is). Despite my profound dislike for mice and other small rodents, here you have tot have a certain liking for the children who've been turned into mice. After all, it's not their fault!
