Indrukwekkend

Hierbij mijn review in het Engels van Goodreads

“Children are dying.”
Lull nodded. “That’s a succinct summary of humankind, I’d say. Who needs tomes and volumes of history? Children are dying. The injustices of the world hide in those three words. Quote me, Duiker, and your work’s done.”

“Pogroms need no reason, sir, none that can weather challenge, in any case. Difference in kind is the first recognition, the only one needed, in fact. Land, domination, pre-emptive attacks—all just excuses, mundane justifications that do nothing but disguise the simple distinction. They are not us. We are not them.”

These two quotes pretty much sum it up. This book is both brutal and violent, with moments of deep emotion.

We've departed from Genebackis (Gardens of the Moon) and transitioned to Seven Cities, a region on the verge of an uprising. Certain "Deus ex Machina" plot devices introduced in the first book gain more depth in this installment. However, for me, Erikson hasn't fully resolved these issues yet. He still needs to provide ample explanations before he's in the clear. Throughout the narrative, there are events that conveniently drive the plot forward.

After completing this book, I've come to trust that Erikson isn't haphazardly inserting these plot devices to cover up a weak storyline. Quite the opposite, Erikson adeptly communicates to the reader that there's a significant overarching narrative tying everything together. Whether this holds true will become evident in the upcoming installments.

I was uncertain about awarding this book a 5-star rating, and I still hold some reservations. The ratings for the initial two books might rely on how the plot unfolds throughout the series. If the series falters, the enigmatic and intricate setup in the first two books might amount to nothing more than affectation.

Nonetheless, I have confidence in Erikson, and this book left me deeply impressed. Therefore, I'm giving it a 5-star rating, as even considering 4 stars feels like an understatement.
