Did not withstand time...

Tommy Verhaegen 16 maart 2025
A much hyped book that i found after a second reading with a 40 year interval mostly long in the tooth. I really had to struggle to get through it, most of the humour failing to be funny. Well-phrased yes, but the main character, Lucky Jim, seems just a backstabbing loser, far from the (anti-)hero he is supposed to be. The plot has not been worn out by time though, this can easily be pictured in a university today. 40 years ago reading Lucky Jim was reason to go to the library and get all other books from Kingsley Amis that i could lay my hands on, now i just am glad i got to the finish and know there will not be a third reading. Since the book hasn't changed it is either me or the world that has moved on.
