Eternal question: the book or the movie?

Tommy Verhaegen 16 maart 2025
I have seen the movie several times and immensely enjoyed it. Always a bad omen vhen going to read the book. Not this time. The book follows closely the film script - or vice versa - but manages to put different accents, appropriate on paper and difficult or downright impossible on screen.
Magic, humor, action in short fantasy of the highest order. It soon gets clear who are the main characters and then we stick with them throughout the book. No separate quests, just one goal to reach. And that may be where the film dominates: there is enouogh material there for several books but it started out as 1 film.
Fast-paced action gets the main-focus, only Willow receives a more profound psychological profile. Or maybe he is the only one who has a complicated enough personality to provide enough material for one.
At one point when Raziel takes humor form again and has aged enouormously while being enchanted, it gives something to think about and is not very funny when you do. It is also quite unique, either people don't age while enchanted or (most often) they start out already quite old to begin with.
A great novel, i recommend it to all fantasy and sword & sorcery lovers.
