Unique and impressive

I have finished reading my ARC copy of When the Wicked sing written by S. L. Debois. This is book one of the Leruna sea series and is a mermaid fantasy with romance.

"From ruin, we rise."

I'm impressed by how this story is written, it captures you and you will not want to stop reading once you've started. The world building is amazing and the tension and adventure make it an amazing read. And then there is that plottwist around the ending that will leave you shocked.

"Homes are the sacred places we hold closest to our hearts."

This story is mainly about Mariana, who is heir to the siren throne. When her sister dissapears, there is only one choice, but before she can act, she gets taken. Where will this dangerous adventure among her enemies take her?

"It's easier to run away into the night than face the challenges that dawn brings to light."

This story contains heavy themes like trauma, loss, death and grief. They are woven through the story and give it an extra depth. The story is also about betrayel, about bravery, about fear, strength, about oppression and losing the freedom to choose for yourself and your loved ones.

"Protective and possesive are two different things."

I enjoyed reading this book very much and I think that the end of this book promises an even more exciting second book. I give it five stars.
