An ode to languages mixed with some amazing fantasy and dragons
I heard so many good things about this book that I was a little scared to read it, but I truly loved it! It’s and ode to languages, wrapped in an amazing fantasy story, including dragons, what more do you want?
We follow Vivien Featherswallow, a girl who follows all the rules and whose goal is to get an internship studying dragon languages. By midnight, Viv has started a civil war.
All the safety she has worked for is collapsing around her. So when a lifeline is offered in the form of a mysterious ‘job’, she grabs it.
The more she learns, whilst on the job, the more she realizes that the bubble she’s grown up in isn’t as safe as she thought, and eventually she must decide: what war is she really fighting?
The characters are divers and go through some great development, especially Vivien. There are some great plot twists and the world building is done perfectly. It is easy to read and you’ll fly through it (on dragon back ).
Some of my favorite quotes:
There exists no direct correlation between the words of one language and another, and no translation can be entirely faithful to its original.
I am a bright, ripe fruit: shiny on the surface, but rotten at the core.
I see a bright future for you, Vivien. But to reach it you may have to look in unexpected places.
And I’m not surprised to hear you call something fear-mongering just because you don’t understand it
Swallows were originally dragons who could speak every language in the world. But it weighed on them, being able to empathize with the stories of so many, so they asked God to relieve their burden and make them light and carefree.
Gideon is a frightened little boy who feels threatened by the intelligence of the women he finds himself surrounded by.
Remissio dolor redemptus est. Forgiveness is suffering redeemed.
Evening, misfits. Ready for redemption?
