Grieving someone who is still present
In 'Our Wives Under the Sea', we meet Miri and Leah, who are happily married. Leah is a marine biologist who has been on a mission with a couple of other researchers. When she returns, after several months instead of only three weeks, Miri believes she has finally got her wife back. However, she soon discovers that the woman who came back is not the Leah she once loved.
From the very first page, I fell in love with the beautiful writing. I liked the switching perspectives between Miri and Leah. Leah had many deep thoughts which also made me think. But you mainly realize how she struggles with the fact that the ocean, which has always been her safe space, has now sort of betrayed her. Miri, on the other hand, is grieving the life they once had, the woman she once loved, and their shared past. The novel shows wonderfully well how you can grieve someone even though they are physically still present.
My favourite so far this year!
