Wat een pareltje!
Laat ik eerst zeggen dat dit boek nog niet vertaald is in het Nederlands op het moment van dit schrijven, dus ik las het (uiteraard) in het Engels.
Ik vermoed echter dat, sinds het boek verfilmd werd met Harry Styles in de hoofdrol en later dit jaar (2022) in de zalen verschijnt, een Nederlandse vertaling er zeker zit aan te komen (en die zal dan ook onmiddellijk in mijn boekenkast terecht komen!)
We volgen zowel de vertelkant van Marion (Toms vrouw) als van Patrick (Toms minnaar). Deze opdeling zorgt ervoor dat je een heel mooi en intrigerend inzicht krijgt in beide zijden die 'strijden' om Toms aandacht en liefde.
Want ook al wordt het omschreven op de achterflap als 'de 2 geliefden delen Tom', je leest de jaloezie, kwaadheid en machteloosheid doorheen het boek.
Ik durf zelfs zo vrij te zijn als Marion een echte 'achterbakse b*tch' te noemen, al is de 'oneerlijke en overspelige' Tom uiteraard ook niet zonder fout.
De manier van schrijven is opgevat als een soort van briefwisseling (de reden waarom wordt op het einde van het verhaal duidelijk), en daarin voel je letterlijk haat en woede, naast medelijden en sympathie.
Ik kan het niet beter omschrijven. Een wervelwind aan emoties, allemaal teweeggebracht door de verblindend mooie Tom.
Ik las dit boek tegelijkertijd met het beluisteren van het audioboek en ik moet zeggen, *credits* voor de vertellers, zij brengen een echte meerwaarde aan de personages en diepgang aan het verhaal.
Ik merkte dat ik het boek veel aandachtiger las en bepaalde zinnen en passages echt in me op kon nemen terwijl ik daar anders misschien wat vlugger overheen gelezen zou hebben.
Ik ben grote fan van dit boek, ik durf te zeggen 'mijn meest favoriete boek' tot dusver dit jaar!
Conclusie
mijn oordeel: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Een volwaardige 5/5, dit is een fantastisch mooi verhaal.
Benieuwd of de verfilming dit niveau zal halen en het boek eer zal aandoen.

My opinion
What a gem!
Let me first say that this book has not yet been translated yet into Dutch at the time of this writing, so I read it (obviously) in English.
I suspect though that since the book was filmed with Harry Styles in the lead role and will be released in cinemas later this year (2022), a Dutch translation is definitely on the way (and it will end up on my bookshelf immediately!)
We follow both the narrative side of Marion (Tom's wife) and Patrick (Tom's lover). This division ensures that you get a very nice and intriguing insight into both sides 'competing' for Tom's attention and love.
Because even though it is described on the back flap as 'the 2 lovers share Tom', you can read the jealousy, anger and powerlessness throughout the book.
I even dare to take the liberty of calling Marion a real 'backstabbing b*tch', although of course the 'dishonest and adulterous' Tom is not without fault either.
The writing style is conceived as a kind of letter correspondence (the reason why becomes clear at the end of the story), and in it you literally feel hatred and anger, alongside pity and sympathy.
I really can't describe it any better. A whirlwind of emotions, all triggered by the blindingly beautiful policeman Tom.
I actually read this book at the same time as listening to the audiobook and I must say, credits to the narrators, they really add value to the characters and depth to the story.
I noticed that I read this book much more attentively and could really absorb certain sentences and passages when I might otherwise have read over them more quickly.
I am a big fan of this book, I dare say 'my most favorite book' so far this year!
Conclusion
my verdict: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A fully-fledged 5/5, this is a fantastically beautiful story.
Eager to see if the film adaptation will live up to this level and give credit to the book.
