The Ivory Key

21 februari 2022
★★★★☆

“Our lives aren’t decided by one choice, but by a series of small decisions that build up to pivotal moments. You can always make a different choice at the next juncture.”

The Ivory Key is Akshaya Raman’s debut YA fantasy and the first book in an Indian-inspired duology. A must read for fans of messy family dynamics, mysterious secret societies and Indiana Jones-like treasure hunts.

Introducing Vira, Riya, Ronak and Kaleb: four estranged royal siblings living in Ashoka, a kingdom dependent on its magic. A magic that is running out. Ashoka’s only hope is the Ivory Key, a mysterious artefact of legend that supposedly leads to more magic. With each sibling having their own interests and motivations in finding the Ivory Key, they are forced to reunite once more and go on a dangerous and mysterious quest.

This story was so much fun. The first part of The Ivory Key focuses on worldbuilding and character dynamics. The pacing therefore is different from other YA fantasies, but this did not bother me. I loved the unique magic system and really enjoyed the focus on sibling dynamics in stead of love relationships. For me, the first part of the book was a great built-up to the second part that was full of magic, booby traps and puzzles. The ending left me with lots of questions, so I cannot wait for the next book in this duology.
