A calmly brewing kettle
The house of fortune continues the story of the Brandt family in eighteenth century Amsterdam, after The miniaturist.
Thea is turning eighteen, ready to enter adulthood and loves visiting the city's theatre. But at home her father and aunt are arguing constantly and the last paintings are being sold. They are hiding secrets from her, but Thea might be hiding some of her own too. But she decides to give up everything to help and save her family. At the same time, there is a feeling that the miniaturist hasn't left.
Compared to The miniaturist, this story is less intense and has a slower pace. You would almost think not much is happening. But underneath this calm and normal looking activities for those times, things are brewing and ready to let its steam out.
