Short but lovely
3.5 stars
Okay, where do I start with this review? Mystery books are normally not the ones I go for, but this really was a fun read! This book had everything I expected: mystery, lies, secrets, betrayal and threats. As a teenager, I was a huge fan of Pretty Little Liars and this story gave me the same vibe.
In the story, we follow Holly, a very quiet but good student. She only has one real friend - who recently moved away - and hides in the library during lunch break. To feel less invisable, she creates the Instagram account “Anonymously Yours", where she reveals secrets and confessions of her classmates.
Mystery books are ones I usually skip, but I think I will stop with that in the future. I really liked looking at all the characters and wondering if they are allies, enemies or just suspects.
Everything about this book give me flashbacks to that time I was obsessed with Pretty Little Liars. And, you know? Holly reminded me of someone in that series. More than once I was annoyed by her, but she reminded me of Alison DiLaurentis (of PLL). You kinda hate her, she does things that make you want to rip out your hair and at the same time... you also kinda love her. The author also announced on her Instagram that she deliberate choose to give her mistakes, let her complain because it makes her 'real'. And that is true: despite everything she does, I did like her.
It was, unfortunately, a very short read. The book could be a 100 pages longer and I wouldn't mind. The plot of this story was very good, but because it is such a thin book, it al went a bit too fast for my liking. It is also why the ending was a bit underwhelming. What happend an sich was very good, but it went too fast.
Looking at the cover and synopsis of this book, I expected an easy read. So, I was kind of surprised that this book had a trigger warning. You don't get the details or a full page description of what is happening, but know that sexual assult is a topic in this book and it has an influence on the plot. Be aware of this.
Despite the length of this book, I really enjoyed reading it. It is perfect for the Pretty Little Liars and A Good Girl's Guide to Murder fans. This book is in English, so it is ideal for the Dutch and Flamish teens who prefer reading in this language (! be aware of the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book !) and because it is so thin, it is also a good book for people who don't like thicker books, just get into reading or just are looking for a quick but fun read.
Thank you, to the author and publisher for the ARC.
