Too much going on
This was.. I'm confused. RTC because I have to go gather my thoughts, which are all over the place, just like this book was.
If you enjoy a fast-paced book with lots of action and different myths and legends meeting each other with fated mates and a bit of RH going on, I definitely recommend this. My review is solely my opinion and what works for me. I don't often write really lengthy reviews, but I feel this book or my rating of it can't be explained in a few light-hearted sentences as I usually do, so here we go.
(spoilers ahead)
- The Plot
Honestly, there's just too much going on for my taste.
We've got a FMC with a more-than-troubled past seemingly finding her strength in a zombie apocalypse while protecting her family. On one of her outings to lead the zombies away she encounters her fated mate, who happens to be a vampire. I'm a big fan of fated mates, so I was more than willing to roll with this (yes, even though she's already married with two children).
But then.. the whole story just kind of.. spins out of control?
Reading this book feels like the author had different ideas for several books, but instead of writing different series, we now have all these ideas packed in one. We get the above-mentioned zombies and vampires, but also the Greek Gods and Greek mythical figures, the Arch angels, Fallen angels/demons and mentions to what I'm assuming is the Catholic God ("Father"), werewolves AND Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. I mean, I can't help but wonder what Thor and the Norse Gods did to be excluded from the mix? And what about wizards and my main man Harry P?
This overlap in myths and legends just doesn't do for me what it maybe does for others. I felt like I was reading different stories and more often than not it seemed that the author also didn't really know how to continue the story in a logical way? There were so many fights and different goals to reach and things going wrong all the time that I'm still not quite sure what the actual plot of the book was.
- The Characters
Let's start with our FMC: Jane. She's had it rough, I'll give her that. She's had an abusive childhood and apparently married the biggest douche in a 50km-radius. However. The way she cries, clings to David and Death so desperately and is being carried all the time annoys me (yes, I get that she's supposed to be tiny and cute). I know a lot of people get annoyed by the crying and I myself am a cryer so that's not what truly bothers me here. I mean, I cry when people in commercials are happy that their laundry is white after using Vanish, at least Jane actually has a reason to cry most of the time. Her overall dependency on the men around her just isn't behaviour I appreciate in a 'strong' FMC. Neither is her tendency to behave in a childish manner around said men (the bouncing around when she's happy, the pouting, .. I half expected her to ask one of them to tie her shoe laces).
Also, can I comment on the fact that this is set in Texas and they laugh about her accent exactly once because she says "y'all" exactly once and they all find her cute and whatnot? Remarks on how cute, special and/or quirky a FMC is always frustrate me, but especially when nothing is said about this further in the story.
In all honesty, Jane is the reason I almost DNF'ed this. I disliked being in her head and reading her thoughts.
A POV that I did enjoy reading was David's. His wasn't whiney or childish, although it was at times a bit dramatic. I love David and low-key hated Death's presence because it's another obstacle for him and Jane. David is loyal to a fault, selfless, playful, strong, sweet and basically everything you'd want in your partner and protector. I love how David and Jane react to each other, even though they don't always want to; the goosebumps, involuntary sighs and smiles, they have that undeniable physical pull. I loved reading about him and the banter with his brothers (especially Gawain), but also the banter with Death near the end. Truly rooting for a happy ending for David.
Since these were the main characters imo, I won't bore you any longer with a review on the others. I know many count Death as a MC, but I honestly didn't like him all that much and he was too touchy-feely with Jane imo. So I conveniently leave him out.
- The Rating
I gave it 2 stars because of 2 important reasons: I disliked Jane to a point where I almost DNF'ed and I disliked the overlap in myths. I did, however, enjoy reading the parts where Jane wasn't prominently present and parts where no new plot twists or characters were introduced.
