Lezersrecensie
Original and heartbreaking
I was immediately intruiged by this book because it sounded different from what I usually read. The cover, title and blurb all sounded interesting to me so I had to give it a try. And I am so glad I did because turns out I really enjoy Alexis her writing style and fantasy!
In When I Was Death, we follow Roslyn. She recently lost her sister, which really made her lose herself too. When a group of mysterious girls come into town, she's intruiged by them right away. Turns out they knew her sister and before Roslyn knows it, she joins them on their road trip. She quickly finds out that these girls are actually Death's reapers and if she wants to know what happened to her sister, she has to become one of them.
That sounds interesting, right?! Well, let me tell you: this book had such a creative and interesting approach to the difficult theme of grieve and loss. Roslyn was a very convincing character to follow and as a reader, you could really feel her pain. Seeing her interact with the other girls, who each had their story, lured me in right away. Each girl was so different and I truly would've loved to dive deeper into each girl's character and past. We got enough for the story, and since it was a rather short book (less than 300 pages) more depth was not possible, but I seriously wouldn't have minded an even longer book here. Anyway, the short length made me finish this in like 24 hours and grabbed my attention big time nonetheless.
From the start, I was very curious what kind of ending this book would have and if it would be satisfactory. I won't spoil anything but I found it to be quite heartbreaking but also really beautiful and just the perfect ending for this story.
