A princes, a Pirate , a mermaid ... but not what you would expect!

This was very enjoyable read, it's a pirate - princess magical journey with both NOT being your typically pirate or princess.
The magic in this book is so lush, mysterious, free and dark all at once. Even though the setting of the whole book is against a very dark fate - you'll witness specks of glitter and hope.

" the world doesn't work with only your eyes, Princess. There's truth in more than what you can see."

The Princess of Visidia, next and (second to) last in line for the role of High Aminancer has been cooped up on her island for her whole life. She's tried numerous times to stow-away in one of the ships setting sail to the 6 other islands of the kingdom, but without luck. It seemed like everyone knew where she was hiding.

The moment she is ready to wield her Soul magic, she will be put in front of the whole kingdom to portray that she has the power over her magic. And it is at that very moment, at her test in front of everyone, that things do not go as planned.

""The gods do not listen to the pleas of the wicked, " I hear myself say. "and neither do I.""

She sets of on her first yourney outside of her comfortable island with an idea, a lot of uncertainty but a fixed mindset. Can she turn the tide around?

This is a story that takes you on a real adventure, with characters that are relatable and realistic. More than once I was biting my underlip or reading superfast to try to understand what was happening. There is a love story that isn't too sappy and our Princess isn't a damsel in distress although she needs some support from her crew.

One section got me up in stitches and that wasn't intended by the author ( I think). I started of reading "Ikae" (Port town on the island of Mornute) as "Ikea" - and then read this sentence:
"but as much as I'd love to parade around Ikae shopping with Bastian, ...". Can you imagine my chuckles? :)

I am eagerly waiting for the next installment in this duology, as I felt like the book had a good ending and could have been a standalone. But with all the twists and turns this book offered, I am guessing the ending wasn't as "good" as thought!

The book itself was a 3.5 to 4 so I choose 4 .
