Magical, deep and amazing
I finished proofreading 'Sold to the Devil' written by Clara Delage. This dark romance Harry Potter retelling is her writer's debut. It's also book one in the Hollow Reign series, which is an interconnected standalone series.
"If he wants to play this game, then we'll play."
As a die hard Harry Potter fan it got me all excited when I heard that Clara was writing a Harry Potter retelling. I not only got to read it, but I was lucky to be among the first readers.
Doing a retelling can be tricky, but Clara definitely did not dissapoint. Bringing a strong magical story that will definitely surprise you. Full of mystery, plottwists, love, fighting and smut.
"I may be a surrogate for the Rigast heir, but I'll never be his fucking toy."
The story is about Aelys and Mattheo. Mattheo is the son and heir from the Dark Mage. Aelys' father is a loyal follower from the Dark Mage and has a lot of influence. Both fathers decide that it would be beneficial for Aelys and Mattheo to be together, so they plan an arranged marriage. Both Aelys and Mattheo don't know about the hidden reasons for this marriage, the question is when and how they will find out.
"He stopped being my enemy and became my protector."
This story plays out in a magical and Harry Potter-like world full of magical creatures. It's written vividly and is very comfortable to read. I truly wanted to know what would happen next. The characters are strong and I grew to love them. Mattheo being the dark bad boy and Aelys nothing less than an angel. Both growing while the story developed. I really felt the tension of them being around the Dark Mage.
"He looks like a dark god."
The story also has an extra layer. Clara used important themes to bring extra depth into the story. If you are sensitive to themes like different kinds of loss and abuse, I would definitely recommend checking out the trigger warnings before reading. I really think these themes make the story more special and I very much look forward to the second book. I give the story five stars.
