Evil incarnate

Looneybooks79 04 september 2025
Before starting this review I would like to point out that there might be some spoilers for the sixth novel in the Robert Hunter series, An evil Mind. It is highly recommended you read that book before this one!

At the end of the previous Robert Hunter thriller, Gallery of the Dead, we learn that an evil criminal has escaped a secure facility, someone Robert knows all too well and will probably come and look for revenge on Robert. That criminal is Lucien Folter, whom Robert had incarcerated after he was caught a few years before (see An Evil Mind!).

Adrian Kennedy and the FBI, the LAPD's Ultra Violent Crimes Unit and the US Marshall's all have to work together to hunt down the most evil and vicious killer the States have ever known. Lucien's 'Guide on how to be a serial killer' was abruptly stopped when he got caught so he will continue his work and in the meantime execute his revenge on Robert. Garcia and Captain Blake who don't know Lucien yet soon will and will soon get he's evil incarnated!

Hunter's life will become a whole lot harder during his hunt on Lucien, especially when he'll realize his private life will suffer from Lucien's search for revenge on him. And in the wake of their battle of minds, a lot of bodies are left along the way. The hunt has started but who will be victorious over the most evil mind?

For the first time in this series Chris Carter has written a direct sequel to one of his novels. And in doing this he has given Hunter a worthy opponent who might even be smarter and stronger than Robert. There's a true psychological battle between those two and it ends in a climatic third act in 'Hunting Evil'. While reading the previous novel and seeing Adrian Kennedy pop up again I was wondering whether we'll see Lucien again after their encounter at Quantico a few years before. That question was quickly answered and how!

It's no secret anymore that I am a huge fan of Carter and even though this book took me a bit longer to finish I was glad to see a stronger mind than Hunter's in action. This is something that doesn't happen too often in this series. I also decided to finish the entire series now there's only three more books left (for now) so I guess you'll see these reviews pop up sooner than later! (next up: Written in Blood!)
