Intense!
Bad Things Happened in This Room by Marie Still was my very first introduction to this author, and I’m so glad I picked up this book!
From the very first page I was completely hooked, and it never let me go. Marie’s writing style is detailed, immersive, and keeps you gripped with exactly what you don’t yet know and can’t quite figure out. This is psychological horror at its best.
The story is told entirely from Willow’s perspective, which makes the reading experience incredibly intense. She is such a well-crafted character: everything she thinks, feels, and goes through hits hard. Her emotions, her delusions, her fears—you feel it all. The combination of her thoughts and the grim storyline made this book claustrophobic and suffocating in the best way. I simply couldn’t stop reading; every page pulled me deeper in. You start questioning what you’re reading, and for me, that was such a brilliant experience.
Towards the end, the pace picks up significantly, with twists and turns coming one after another. The plot twist hit me like a bomb—I was left reading with my mouth wide open, while at the same time my heart broke into pieces from both horror and sorrow. The epilogue literally gave me chills. What an incredible and dark conclusion!
This book was an intense and unforgettable reading experience. It grabs you by the throat and never lets go. I definitely want to read more from Marie!
One small note: I would recommend checking the trigger warnings beforehand, because this story is heavy and it really gets under your skin. But if you love dark, psychological horror that cuts straight to the bone, this is an absolute must-read.
