Lezersrecensie
Origineel!
Oh boy, this was yet another Holly Jackson book that I absolutely devoured!
The concept is very original: the main character is not quite dead yet and goes looking for her own killer. That alone made the story feel really unique to me. You constantly feel the clock ticking, which really adds to the urgency of the mystery.
That said, I did miss some of the tension I felt in her earlier books. Still, I really enjoyed following the whole Cluedo-like investigation. A big plus were the small hints sprinkled throughout the story, allowing you to actively piece things together. With every chapter, I had a different suspect on my list haha.
I felt a nice connection with Jet, although I did question some of her choices. And even though this book is marketed as Adult, it still felt very YA to me. The FMC is 27, but if you’d told me she was 17, I would’ve believed it.
As always, the writing style was easy to read, making you fly through the book. Some side characters definitely got on my nerves, but luckily there were others who turned out to be real highlights.
Unfortunately, I found the ending a bit debatable, similar to her other books. This slightly weakens the big “wow” moment. That said… the very last pages did make me emotional (the letters and the song lyrics, iykyk).
All in all, I really enjoyed the writing style, the murder mystery and the friendship. There were just a few too many (small) drawbacks for this to be a five-star read for me.
Highly recommended!
