Another excellent story
After Jeff's murder, both Emma and Daryl try to rebuild their lives. But Daryl witnessed Jeff's murder and fears he'll always have to look over his shoulder from now on. Then he's assigned a new client, and a strange time of chance encounters begins, many questions from her, and his troubled live become even more troubled. Meanwhile, Emma can't move on either; she wants to know why Daryl told so many lies to Jeff, who the man is she killed in self-defense, and where her violin is. Hoping for some answers, she turns to Daryl.
Because we know what happened in the first part, "All the Beautiful Lies," it took some getting used to, as Emma doesn't know everything that happened. This was a bit confusing at first, but that resolves within a chapter.
There's little tangible tension in the first half of the story, likely because the focus is on the emotions of both Daryl and Emma. But that quickly changes with the arrival of Piper (Daryl's new client) and other developments in both their lives. Because we read the story from two perspectives, Emma (aka The Widow) and Daryl (aka The Professional), it's easy to empathize with both characters. Their feelings of fear, anxiety, uncertainty, etc. are palpable. All the Beautiful Secrets is described as a gripping, addictive psychological thriller. Gripping it certainly is, addictive is also perfectly apt because the wait for the final installment is unbearable, and psychological can also be attributed to this story. A thriller is a bit of an overstatement; there should have been much more suspense. Nevertheless, All the Beautiful Secrets is another excellent story and definitely deserves its 4* rating.
