Josiah Harrison spend his senior Spring Break of high school hiking with his his friends Liam, Zoë and Parker.

Just before this hiking adventure their friendship began to crumble. Now Josiah leaves the woods alone, his 3 friends murdered. What happened there in the woods? Is Josiah really innocent or is he keeping a dark secret?

Josiah is the son of an abusive father and a mother who's almost every day drunk and/or high. He also needs alcohol or drugs to keep his feelings under control, to keep his secrets a secret and to endure his father's beatings.

The chapters are divided into past and present and bit by bit they tell you the story of the life of Josiah and his relationship with his friends.

At around half of the book there's some tension notable in the past-chapters but most of the tension floats away because of the numerous thoughts of Josiah.

The characters are not very extensively described. Much of their lives and ideas remain unknown.

The story is well written. There is a slight sense of knowing what happened, but it still remains a matter of guessing how and why. The ending is surprising and beautiful in a strange way.

Only the trees know is a pleasantly readable book that is difficult to put down and provides several hours of reading pleasure.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
