Geweldig!
Avalon Tower by C.N. Crawford and Alex River is a fantasy novel with spies and Arthurian Legends woven into it. As a great King Arthur collector I was very eager to read this book.
Now that I have finished it, I can say this book is unlike any Arthur novel I have read and I have read many. From the very first I was totally immersed into the story of Nia, who is on holiday in the south of France. Some years ago Fae invaded the human world. After many casualties in the war between Fae and humans a fragile peace ensued and the Veil, a magical barrier, keeps humans and Fae on their side. As Nia gets involved in rescuing some demi-Fae who want to escape the cruel Fae King, she gets into danger and meets the one who got away and discovers she has some unusual magic.
The plot, story-line and world-building is fantastic, so vivid and beautiful described. The magic system is unique. The writing style is flowing and fast paced. Nia is a great character, a normal girl who gets into a world she never thought she would be in. She gets to study in Avalon Tower, an academy for spies and of course not everyone is happy a normal girl like her gets emitted there. There is some bullying, but she also gets some great friends. As the story progresses there is mentioning of a kind of prophecy in which Nia plays a role and Nia learns more about her magic.
As I said, I have read many Arthurian novels, but Avalon Tower is a whole new book in which fantasy gets mixed with the myth/legend about Arthur. I loved how the authors mentioned Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table, Nimue, the Lady of the Lake and made all of these characters totally new characters in their book.
Avalon Tower is a fantastic fantasy book, with a fast paced writing style, great world-building, Arthurian legends, magic, danger, betrayal, romance, with a great story-line, and with a great female main character, a book I enjoyed immensely and a book that I cannot recommend enough! This is a book for every fantasy reader, but definitely for those who loves stories about King Arthur.
