A strange and dark journey!
Strange Gods by Allison Kimble is a strange yet enchanting YA debut. When the reader meets Spooky, the main character, she is at a bootcamp for troubled teens. This allows the story to immediately captivate the reader, especially since the stakes are high: either Spooky behaves at the bootcamp or her parents will not allow her to come home again. But then, something strange happens…
The story is set up in a way that makes it quite believable. I loved how Spooky’s reality collided with the supernatural. And the supernatural, let me tell you, was so very strange but in a particularly good way. It allowed for the author to create situations in which change prevailed both literally and figuratively. However, at times the pacing was too fast for my liking (especially in the beginning). I would have loved this story to be a couple of pages longer, just so it would go into depth more.
When it comes to characters, Spooky was a remarkably interesting one. I did find her to be a tat bit bleak at times though, which goes back to me wanting the story to be longer. I like books to explore a character’s feelings, thoughts and past thoroughly. Strange Gods does explore them, but it does not do it as carefully as I would have preferred. Besides that, Spooky does have a unique voice and she grows a lot throughout the book, which is something I really enjoyed!
One of the other characters I think of as amazing is Carcass. The ways in which he did and did not understand the human world allowed for lovely conversations between him and Spooky. In addition, his sassiness, strangeness, and love for stories were all brilliantly executed. He is everything you do not expect him to be, while being exactly what you hope him to be as a reader.
In short, Strange Gods is a unique YA novel. If you like the supernatural but want something different than your regular fantasy, Strange Gods is definitely worth your reading time.
P.S. I loved the epilogue and I know for sure you will love it too… Go read this book!
