“I saw you, and you made sense to me.”
Scarlett Vandermeer is a Junior at Stanford and a student-athlete who specializes in platform diving. Scarlett prefers to keep her head down, concentrating on getting into med school and on recovering from the injury that almost ended her career.
Swim captain, world champion, all-around aquatics golden boy, Lukas Blomqvist thrives on discipline. It’s how he wins gold medals and breaks records: complete focus, with every stroke. On the surface, Lukas and Scarlett have nothing in common. Until a well-guarded secret slips out, and everything changes.
I never knew I would love to learn more about diving and swimming. I loved the whole story but I was really really interested in how these competitions and all work. And how different diving really is from swimming! Ali Hazelwood has done her research and she translates it into a very interesting and easy to understand story. I feel like that’s her superpower: make a difficult topic easy to read.
“It’s not a good idea for me to be with someone who resents wanting me.”
The character development was great! Scarlett has a mental block and she’s constantly struggling, stressed and frustrated. But Lukas helps her see things differently and really changes the way she feels about herself and her talent. And him… On the outside he seems like this swimming machine who just collects gold medals like candy but there is so much more to him. Their feelings towards one another was so beautiful to watch and it just makes everything about them make so much more sense.
“The only time wasted is the time we are apart.”
The friendships felt so real. The dynamics, the struggles, the jealousy and the happiness. It felt very relatable and I really liked that.
Scarlett and Lukas… Phew. The pining. The chemistry. GIVE IT TO ME! This felt like 50 Shades Grey done right. Without the awkward acting. Is that an unpopular opinion?
