Originele feelgoodroman
Van Sue Heath las ik eerder de roman The secret ingredient. Een mooi verhaal over verlies en het vinden van nieuwe vriendschappen.
Toen ik haar tweede boek zag: The Storytellers, wilde ik die ook graag lezen.
In the Storytellers zijn vier personages die centraal staan. Allen hebben wat verloren en zijn op zoek naar iets, maar ze weten niet wat. Het oudste van het viertal is Hattie. Ze is sinds kort weduwe. Haar huwelijk was moeizaam met een dominante man. Nu is ze ‘vrij’. In de bibliotheek ziet ze een flyer voor een schrijfwedstrijd voor groepen. De eerste die ze inlijft om mee te doen is Will, de bibliotheekmedewerker. Hij heeft een gebroken hart en zijn leven staat in een slaapstand. De tweede persoon die ze strikt is de jonge Avril. Zij heeft haar baan opgezegd en komt naar de bibliotheek alsof ze naar haar werk is, want ze heeft thuis niets gezegd over het ontslag. Tot slot sluit Stuart aan, pas gepensioneerd en zoekende hoe hij zijn leven nu moet gaan invullen. Het blijkt een groep te zijn die elkaar aanvult en versterkt en die combinatie blijkt voor allen helend te zijn.
Wat een heerlijk verhaal om te lezen. De personages zijn goed uitgewerkt. Al hun twijfels en gedachten komen realistisch en eerlijk over. De interactie tussen de personages zit goed en voelt natuurlijk aan, net als de dialogen die zijn beschreven. Je voelt je als lezer de vijfde persoon die aan tafel zit in de bibliotheek en luistert met wat er gebeurt en wordt gezegd.
Leuk is het om te zien dat de schrijfopdracht die ze doen voor de wedstrijd, ook geheel is opgenomen in het boek. Je leest dus een boek in een boek. Om de beurt schrijven ze een hoofdstuk en dat vullen ze van elkaar weer aan. Het is knap gedaan, want wat ze voelen, denken en ontdekken in hun eigen zoektocht naar waar ze nu staan, is verwerkt in hun onderlinge verhalen. En toch wordt het een geheel.
Het is op fijne wijze geschreven, met humor en liefde en een kleine dosis drama. The Storytellers is een mooi boek met lieve personages in een origineel feelgoodverhaal.

When I saw her second book: The Storytellers, about a group of people
who participate in a wrtingcompetition, I wanted to read that one too.
What a wonderful story to read. The characters are well developed. All their doubts and thoughts come across as realistic and honest. The interaction between the characters is good and feels natural, just like the dialogues that are described. As a reader, you feel like the fifth person listening to what happens and is said.
It is nice to see that the writing assignment that they do for the competition is also completely included in the book. So you read a book within a book. They take turns writing a chapter and they complete it from each other. It is well done, because what they feel, think and discover in their own search for where they are now, is incorporated into their mutual stories. And yet it becomes a whole.
It is written in a nice way, with humor and love and a small dose of drama. The Storytellers is a beautiful book with sweet characters in an original feel-good story.
The Storytellers focuses on four characters. They have all lost something and are looking for something, but they don't know what. The oldest of the four is Hattie. She has recently become a widow. Her marriage was difficult with a dominant man. Now she is 'free'. In the library she sees a flyer for a writing competition for groups. The first person she recruits to participate is Will, the library employee. He has a broken heart and his life is in sleep mode. The second person she recruits is the young Avril. She has quit her job and comes to the library as if she is at work, because she didn't say anything at home about the dismissal. Finally, Stuart joins in, recently retired and looking for a way to fill his life. It turns out to be a group that complements and strengthens each other and that combination turns out to be healing for everyone.
