Teen me definitely enjoyed this better

This reread started as some kind of buddy read with a friend in the hopes to this time finish this series and see why we were so annoyed with this story in the first place. Not that teenage me ever could read the whole series, because the last book in the series never got translated to Dutch in the first place.

The first thing that I noticed were how freaking long the chapters were. I guess the author really had faith in the attention span of teens in the 2010's. The second thing I noticed was how chapters sometimes changed point of view randomly. From first person to third person perspective is quite a whiplash-inducing way to read. I think it would've been better to announce the point of view or just actually make that part a whole new chapter instead. Not that that will change, since this is an older series, but still.

I had a hard time deciding how I liked this book, not going to lie. I don't feel a connection to the characters (anymore), so I kind of didn't give two shits as what would happen to them sadly. There's also just instant attraction, which I don't like a lot. I think the author could've waited some more with the whole 'love' aspect of things, but I guess that might not have fit into the timeline of book two.

In the end I did think the world building is interesting. So that did save the general dislike of it quite a bit. I silently hope I will like book two better than book one, but my friend and I established that we got irritated by something in the past, so that might be a long shot. I will definitely see this through, however and I will let you know how I like the next two books.
