Funny gateway into dark romance

This was the book of the month for December for 'Het Kempisch Boekenclubje'. I was really curious about it. I planned to read it as an ebook, but I kindly got book fairied by one of my friends, which means I got to read the physical copy and I'm very grateful for it.

This story is told from a dual POV of Sloane aka the Orb Weaver and Rowan aka the Boston Butcher. Those titles are what they are known as as serial killers. They hunt a specific target: other killers. When Sloane finds herself in a pickle after killing her latest target, Rowan frees her from her cage and basically fanboys all over her. When the two start a yearly competition to find their target first the game is on! But who will come out on top?

I have to say it: a lot of things were ruined, for example orzo pasta and cookies and cream ice cream. But for all its antics, I think this was a pretty humorous book. I love how Rowan fawns all over Sloane. There definitely is some tension, but I wasn't really high strung on it when I was reading it. The first part of it has no smut, which is fine for me, but Rowan definitely has ideas that he wants to work on later if you get what I'm getting at.

I have to say I didn't see the twist coming. I also was kind of sad to see that that specific thing was the twist. And however surprising it was, it also was resolved super quickly, which left me hanging a bit. With all the hype around this book, I had quite the expectations and they weren't totally met.

Did I think this was a bad book? No, not at all. I really think the buzz around this book upped my expectations, which made it tougher to prove itself. I did have fun reading i. The writing style is really smooth and it reads like a train. This is definitely a good gateway book into dark romance if you want to test the waters of the genre.
