Better than book one, but still not very impressed

Xan 17 november 2025
After a disappointing book one I had to see if I can find the hype in book 2. I will tell you more about my thoughts and grievances in the review. I once again read this book via Kobo Plus in Dutch.

I think I finally figured out in this book what irked me so much and it was Cecelia as a nineteen-year-old. She once again felt so whiny in the first part of this book. Every thought she had seemed to be a 'woe is me'. Her going on and on and on about how she was different while she kept falling into the same traps over and over again. She definitely had her 'New Moon' moment in the beginning. Her tendency to instantly be attracted to a person just felt so far away from me personally as well that I just couldn't get into her character.

The timeskip saved this whole book for me to be honest. The first part of this book had me as bored as book one until the final chapters of it where something finally happens. This book did finally get my attention from the drama of Sean and Dominic returning until the end. So that's why it gets .25 more than book one.

For the first part of the book I just couldn't stop frowning, though. I mean tattooing someone without consent is just very icky to me. The author once again had to mention the men's scents thirteen times again. I don't know what it was but all there characters felt so questionable to me. I think me having an inkling about the big twist probably ruined the shock factor, but I'm also not really attached to any of them, so that doesn't help either. I did end up liking the tension between Tobias and Cecelia more after the timeskip, before that I didn't really give a fuck.

Did I think this one was better than the first one? Yes. Did I care more because of it? Absolutely not. Three stars still feels quite generous after the boredom I felt while reading, but it did feel better than book one, so three stars from me.
