Fast and thrilling read, but lacking realism

Not Quite Dead Yet was the book club pick for November in 'Het Kempisch Boekenclubje'. I had seen this book around, so I was curious for it, even though I didn't really know what to expect. The people who had read the book before me rated it really high, so the did adjust some of my expectations.

I got to be honest, the beginning was rough for me. I had doubts about the writing when I started this. So I was unsure if I would like this. I did get into it some chapters in, trying to solve the mystery alongside the characters. Some situations I predicted right, the ending I however got wrong, but that's just part of it I guess.

I did wonder about how quickly Jet got out of the hospital. I mean, that was a significant head trauma right there and she got out in what? Two to three days? This whole situation did ick me a bit, making it feel a lot less realistic. So if you're looking for total realism, this book ain't it chief. Jet herself does have some childish tendencies sometimes and didn't read like a twenty-seven-year-old in all honesty. However, I did grow to like her and her never-ending sass.

I don't know what's in this book, but it reads like a train. I got through it in less than 24 hours. I didn't predict the right killer, but I did read some of the other situations right, so it wasn't 100% unpredictable. My favourite quote this time was this one: ‘No, shouldn’t eat the crime scene.’

In conclusion: a fast and thrilling read, perfect to read in fall season. This one is solving a crime alongside the characters who aren't detectives or police, which makes it more fun. If you were looking for absolute realism, this ain't it, but in the end it was an entertaining read and I do recommend it.
