Dust Bowl

Elsa Wolcott groeit op in een rijk burgergezin maar wordt zwaar door haar ouders opgesloten, omdat ze niet knap genoeg is volgens hen om naar buiten te komen. Alle regels worden haar opgesteld en daardoor begint Elsa te rebelleren. Op een avond ontsnapt ze uit het huis en gaat tegen alle regels in op stap waar ze de Italiaanse boerenzoon Raffaello Martinelli leert kennen. Tussen beide ontstaat een geheime relatie maar dan slaat het noodlot toe en blijkt Elsa zwanger te zijn geraakt van 'Rafe'. Haar ouders sturen haar thuis weg en laten haar achter op de dorpel van de Martinellis. Gelukkig voor haar wordt ze verwelkomd in het gezin, hoewel het contact in het begin nogal stroef verloopt vindt Elsa al heel snel haar weg in het boerenleven.

Dertien jaar later, in 1934, ontstaat in The Great Plains, waaronder ook Texas waar de Martinellis wonen, een grote crisis namelijk de Grote Depressie en daarbij ook de 'Dust Bowl', door overvloedig en verkeerde landbouw te bedrijven wordt de aarde helemaal los zand dat dan in grote zandstormen over 'the plains' (de grote vlakten) waait. Deze crisis zorgt ervoor dat heel wat boeren hun job niet meer kunnen uitvoeren, want de grond laat niet meer toe om planten te doen groeien en de dieren worden allemaal ziek door het opgewaaide stof. Ook mensen lijden onder deze constante stofwolken. Huizen, landbouwgrond... alles wordt bedekt door een dikke laag stof en zand.

Elsa en haar twee kinderen, Loreda en Ant, moeten hierin zien te overleven. Rafe heeft hen intussen zomaar laten zitten en is ervandoor gegaan en laat zijn vrouw en kinderen en ouders achter in deze ellende, op zoek naar een 'beter leven' elders. Terwijl de Amerikaanse regering het probleem onderschat en specialisten toch naar een oplossing zoeken, rijst de vraag op bij Elsa, en vooral bij haar rebellerende dochter, of ze moeten blijven wonen in deze 'stofkom'. Tot Ant ziek wordt en de beslissing eigenlijk voor hen wordt gemaakt. Elsa en haar kinderen nemen de vrachtwagen en vertrekken richting Californië. En hoewel het gerucht de ronde gaat dat het leven daar beter is, komen de drie terecht in een poel van ellende waarbij ze als migranten en jobstelers worden beschouwd. Enkel op de katoenplantages (seizoensarbeid) kan men terecht voor werk maar dat gaat gepaard met een grote vorm van uitbuiting, een nieuw soort slavernij. Tot er protest komt uit onverwachte hoek!
Sinds ik vorig jaar 'Aan het einde van de wereld' las van Kristin Hannah ben ik op heel korte tijd grote fan geworden van haar verhalen. Voorheen zag ik de boeken wel voorbijkomen maar dacht ik altijd dat die niks voor mij waren (en ik moet toegeven, de oude covers van de boeken vond ik minder aantrekkelijk dan de nieuwe covers die Uitgeverij Boekerij voor deze boeken heeft uitgewerkt). Dankzij de boekenclub heb ik nu reeds twee boeken gelezen van Hannah en het smaakt eigenlijk naar meer. Dus dit is zeker nog niet het laatste boek dat ik zal lezen en recenseren. Haar talent om een historische feit om te zetten in aangrijpende fictie is enkel maar aan te prijzen. Ik kende natuurlijk wel uit boeken en films e.d. het verhaal rond 'The Dust Bowl' maar dat het zo'n impact had op de bewoners en dat er zo'n grote migratiegolf ontstond waarbij Amerikanen in hun eigen land als uitschot werden behandeld, met de bijnaam Okies (van Oklahoma), daar was ik helemaal niet van op de hoogte. Ook de vele strijden die geleverd werden tegen de natuur, tegen uitbuiting en om te overleven, daar wist ik nog niks van. Hoewel dit boek fictie is toont het toch een zwarte pagina in de geschiedenis van het land dat zich 'The Land of the Free' noemt en 'The American Dream' wil verspreiden. Een prachtig, hartverscheurend en aangrijpend boek, dat kan je 'De Vier Windstreken' zeker noemen! Een aanrader dus!

Elsa Wolcott grows up in a wealthy middle-class family but is heavily confined by her parents because, according to them, she is not beautiful enough to go outside. All rules are imposed on her, which leads Elsa to start rebelling. One evening, she escapes from the house and, defying all the rules, goes out, where she meets the Italian farmer’s son, Raffaello Martinelli. A secret relationship develops between them, but then fate strikes, and Elsa discovers she is pregnant with Rafe’s child. Her parents send her away and leave her on the doorstep of the Martinelli family. Fortunately for her, she is welcomed into the household. Although the initial interactions are rather awkward, Elsa soon finds her place in the farming life.

Thirteen years later, in 1934, a major crisis hits The Great Plains, including Texas, where the Martinellis live: the Great Depression, and the natural disaster called the 'Dust Bowl.' Due to excessive and improper farming practices, the soil turns into loose dust, which then sweeps across the plains in massive dust storms. This crisis makes it impossible for many farmers to continue their work, as the ground can no longer support crops, and the animals all become sick from the airborne dust. People also suffer under the constant dust clouds. Homes, farmland… everything is covered by a thick layer of dust and sand.

Elsa and her two children, Loreda and Ant, must find a way to survive in these conditions. Meanwhile, Rafe has abandoned them, leaving his wife, children, and parents behind in this misery, in search of a 'better life' elsewhere. While the U.S. government underestimates the problem and experts search for solutions, Elsa—and especially her rebellious daughter—faces the question of whether they should stay in this 'dust bowl.' When Ant falls ill, the decision is effectively made for them. Elsa and her children take the truck and head toward California. And although rumors circulate that life there is better, the three end up in a pit of misery, regarded as migrant workers and job stealers. Only on the cotton plantations (seasonal labor) can they find work, but it comes with severe exploitation—a new form of slavery. That is, until protest arises from an unexpected side!
Since I read 'The Great Alone' by Kristin Hannah last year, I’ve quickly become a huge fan of her stories. I had seen her books before, but I always thought they weren’t for me (and I have to admit, I found the old covers less appealing than the new ones that the Dutch publisher, 'Uitgeverij Boekerij' has designed for these books). Thanks to the book club, I have now read two of Hannah’s books, and I want more. So this certainly won’t be the last book I read and review. Her talent for turning historical events into gripping fiction is truly commendable.

Of course, I was familiar with the story of the Dust Bowl from books and films, but I had no idea it had such an impact on the residents and led to such a massive wave of migration, in which Americans were treated as outcasts in their own country, earning the nickname “Okies” (from Oklahoma). I also knew nothing about the many struggles people faced against nature, exploitation, and the fight to survive. Although this book is fiction, it still depicts a dark chapter in the history of the country that calls itself “The Land of the Free” and seeks to promote “The American Dream.”

A beautiful, heartbreaking, and gripping book—one that truly deserves to be called 'The Four Winds'! Highly recommended!
