Als ik 6 sterren kon geven…

Als ik 6 sterren kon geven, dan gaf ik ze met plezier aan dit boek.
Wat een ontzettend goed geschreven verhaal!
Al sedert mijn studies Engelse literatuur ben ik Shakespeare-fanboy en dus vond ik een academia-thriller die zich afspeelt in een Shakespeare setting (theaterstudenten in opleiding) een heel leuk concept.
Het verhaal is heel mooi uitgevoerd, met passende en aangrijpende Shakespeare passages erin verwerkt.
Ik weet dat men dit boek heel vaak vergelijkt met ‘De Verborgen Geschiedenis’ (The Secret History) van Donna Tartt, maar dat boek las ik 2 maanden geleden en kon me niet bekoren, ik gaf het een matige 3/5.
Vermoedelijk trekt de Shakespeake-setting die mevrouw Rio neerzet mij veel meer mee in het verhaal dan de Griekse filosofie van mevrouw Tartt.
Qua plot is het geen rocket science, een vrij standaard plot met een twist die je wel een eindje ziet aankomen, maar ik vond het wel origineel en leuk gebracht, zoals ik al zei met de vergelijkende Shakespeare quotes.
Hoedje af, een mooie 5/5 sterren, enkel omdat 6 niet mogelijk is.

What a very well written story!
I have been a Shakespearean fanboy ever since my English literature, so I thought an academia thriller set in a Shakespearean setting (theatre students in their final year of education) was a very nice concept.
The story is beautifully executed, with appropriate and poignant Shakespearean passages incorporated.
I know that this book is often compared to 'The Secret History' by Donna Tartt, but I read that book 2 months ago and really didn't like it, I gave it a mediocre 3/5.
Presumably the Shakespearean setting that Ms. Rio creates draws me into the story much more than Ms. Tartt's Greek philosophy.
In terms of plot, it's not rocket science, a fairly standard plot with a twist that you can see coming quite ahead of time, but I thought it was original and nicely put with the comparative Shakespeare quotes, as I said before.
Hats off, a nice 5/5 stars, just because a 6 is not an option.
